Sunday in Outer Blogness: Personal Entrance/Exit Stories!

chanson, January 17, 2010November 9, 2011

This week we have had a bonanza of personal conversion and deconversion stories! Naturally, you probably noticed Saganist’s story posted here yesterday. But there are more! Check out the Urban Koda’s funny story When I knew…. Greenish Blue reposted a fascinating mini-series recounting his personal history with Mormonism and belief. BYU agnostic has written an explanation of why he chooses to be agnostic. And Happy Lost Sheep has also told the tale of his conversion to Mormonism and has later crisis of faith (note: as far as I can tell, HLS has not left the faith entirely but is happy to be exploring Mormonism as something of an NOM).

Note to any lurkers here: If you’ve been thinking of writing up your own faith journey and are looking for a place to post it, we’re happy to post personal conversion/deconversion narratives here at MSP. Just email me: chanson dot exmormon at gmail dot com.

In other news, I’m sure you’ve all heard about the disaster in Haiti. If you haven’t donated to the relief effort yet, please do. So many blogs posted about this that it’s a bit much for me to round up and sort all of the posts. Let me just highlight a few: Jon of USU Shaft has provided a list of links to relief organizations and how to donate. Aerin has described two interesting books that provide insight to what Haiti is like. And Dale posted the best response to Pat Robertson’s offensive comment.

In sex-and-gender, Holly reports on findings about what works — better than pharmaceuticals — at stimulating women’s arousal. And do you remember the new “our girls are pink” LDS YW manuals? Well, the other Holly has found a fantastic, empowering response!! Also kind of sex-and-gender: LdChino provides resources for up-to-the-minute coverage of the Proposition 8 trial.

Well, it’s been a week since my last SiOB — although this one (like last week’s) was supposed to be on Sunday. I could just switch this thing to Monday, but then it would start slipping to Tuesday, etc., and I don’t want to go down that slippery slope. This…

As cool as it was when the CoJCoL-dS dumped its racist doctrines, it was clear (even at the time) that there are disadvantages to giving the keys of defining Mormon doctrine over to the quorum of the anonymous website maintainers. Officially endorsing questionable apologetics on the Book of Mormon (like…

By now you’ve probably heard the story about the Mormon family who dumped their son in Bryce Canyon when he didn’t want to serve a mission — and about the BYUI professor who got fired for posting pro-LGBT remarks on Facebook. By Common Consent’s new publishing house looks like it’s…

    Update:

Mason just posted his disaffection story about examining the questions on his shelf.

Also, Miguel has done a series of posts about why he left the church — A fascinating international story!

I just wanted to mention this before I forget. Why does everybody else get a contest? T&S has Mormon of the Year. BCC has Gentile of the Year. MM has the Niblets. I’d like to suggest MSP take on hosting the William Law X-Mormon of the Year award. Please consider, and if there’s interest, I’ll work up a graphic of William Law as Wolverine that I think might work.
