Sunday in Outer Blogness: Ketchup edition!

chanson, January 27, 2013

I hope you’ve all taken the time to look over the list of nominees for the Brodie Awards! If not, you still have until February 6 to vote.

Over the last two weeks, Mormon Feminism was in the news — specifically the same folks who brought you pants in church are lobbying to have a woman pray in General Conference. Whether or not the leaders are OK with letting a woman pray in conference, they are certainly not OK with Mormon women organizing themselves in order to tell the church what to do. So, the church gave them an oblique smack-down — telling women not to lobby for their rights, without actually acknowledging the existence of the organization doing the lobbying. Many people were not happy with the reminder that women should be invisible — and even found faithful Mormon examples to counter the message. Blame it on the priesthood perhaps, but other churches have similar problems.

In other news, Ruby Jessop turned up (and got herself and her kids out of the FLDS). The discussions of gun control and school security are still going strong — the NRA has seriously jumped the shark (though this video is almost as sad/funny). And of course there was everyone’s favorite topic: the church’s money! Plus other sad money woes.

In entertainment, it’s Christians vs. mishies in a contest of Why can’t they see?! Plus a new hymn parody and a strange For the Strength of Youth video (which looks like it’s not actually intended to be making fun of “For the Strength of Youth”). And I loved this critique of new study that claims to have found Indian (India) DNA markers in the native populations of Aboriginal Australia:

These scientists are suggesting that a small group of non-native immigrants arrived in Australia by boat, bringing non-native animals and new tool technology with them AND actually LEFT Behind evidence of doing so????? Bull Shit…this sort of thing does not happen in real life.

There were also some exit stories as well as tales of what happens next. Of course, studying scriptures and church history is so much more interesting on this side of the transition!!

And now for a few plugs! Apparently some familiar folks will be appearing in this movie. Young Stranger has told his story in a four-part Gay Mormon Stories Podcast. Then I have to admit that I was pretty happy to read this:

I enjoyed ExMormon, probably because I related so strongly to so many of the characters in it. I even read it twice.

Yay! Despite trying to break in a new browser, I managed to finish SiOB in time to help the kids with their homework without a crazy time-crunch!! Hopefully, I will be able to get my new setup for updating Outer Blogness working as well, so I can get all the new blogs on there. Have a great week!!

Let’s see what’s up in the world of former-Mormons-and-friends this week! Two people have moved on from discussing Mormonism, one has posted an exit story, others are working through their Mormon issues, dreaming of Mormons, contemplating other people’s choices — or interpreting miracles! Jonathan Blake asks whether we should express…

Yes, today marks everyone’s favorite excuse for serving green beer and other Irish treats, plus some other important occasions such as my half-birthday (I guess that makes me 41 1/2), as well as the International day of action to defend apostates and blasphemers.
